<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">Ao menos 28% das meninas sul-africanas em idade escolar estão infectadas com o vírus HIV, segundo o ministro da Saúde do país, Aaron Motsoaledi. Entre os garotos, a taxa de infecção seria de 4%. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">Segundo as estatísticas oficiais, mais de 5 milhões de sul-africanos, ou cerca de 10% da população do país, têm o vírus causador da</FONT><B> <FONT FACE="Arial">aids</FONT></B><FONT FACE="Arial">. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">Para Motsoaledi, os números indicam que as garotas sul-africanas estão sendo exploradas por homens mais velhos, que trocam presentes ou favores por sexo. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">"Está claro que não são os garotos jovens que estão dormindo com essas garotas, são homens mais velhos", disse ele, segundo o jornal local The Sowetan. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">"Precisamos tomar uma atitude contra esses homens mais velhos, porque eles estão destruindo nossas crianças", afirmou. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">Segundo o ministro, algumas meninas grávidas, com idades entre 10 e 14 anos, também estão contaminadas com o vírus. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">Ele disse que o grande número de jovens com HIV lhe "destrói a alma". </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">Medicamentos </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">Motsoaledi vem sendo elogiado internacionalmente por seus esforços no combate ao HIV. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">Após a a sua indicação como ministro pelo presidente Jacob Zuma, em 2009, a África do Sul começou a implementar o maior programa mundial de distribuição de medicamentos antirretrovirais. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">Dentro desse programa, o número de pessoas que recebem os medicamentos no país mais que dobrou, passando de 678.500 para 1,5 milhão, segundo as estatísticas oficiais. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">O governo anterior, do presidente Thabo Mbeki, questionava a ligação entre HIV e</FONT><B> <FONT FACE="Arial">aids</FONT></B><FONT FACE="Arial"> e argumentava que não tinha condições de oferecer o tratamento para todos os sul-africanos que o necessitavam. </FONT></P>
<P ALIGN=LEFT><FONT FACE="Arial">No ano passado, mais de 260 mil pessoas morreram em consequência da</FONT><B> <FONT FACE="Arial">aids</FONT></B><FONT FACE="Arial"> na África do Sul - o equivalente a quase metade do total de mortes no país. </FONT></P>
